Regulation (EU) 2016/426 (GAR) – Gas Appliances
Regulation (EU) 2016/426 (GAR – Gas Appliances Regulation) establishes the essential safety and performance requirements applicable to appliances designed for cooking, heating, hot water production, cooling, lighting, and washing, which burn gaseous fuels and which, if they use water, operate with a normal operating temperature not exceeding 105°C.
The following also fall within the scope of the regulation:
- Forced-draught burners
- Heating bodies to be equipped with such burners
- Fittings, intended as safety, controlling or regulating devices and sub-assemblies intended to be marketed separately
Regulation (EU) 2016/426 is directly applicable in all Member States of the European Union and entered into full application on April 21, 2018, replacing Directive 2009/142/EC.
Obligations before placing on the market
Before being placed on the European Union market, appliances and fittings must:
- Meet the essential safety and performance requirements set out in the regulation
- Undergo the applicable conformity assessment procedures
- Be accompanied by technical documentation and the EU declaration of conformity
- Bear the CE marking; for appliances, the marking is accompanied by the identification number of the notified body involved in the production control phase
The regulation also establishes specific obligations for all economic operators in the supply chain — manufacturers, authorized representatives, importers, and distributors — in order to ensure high levels of safety, compliance, and traceability of products placed on the European market.
